While your point about discrimination in india is completely valid, I think you missed the essence of what that the author was trying to convey. Yes, the lower castes were discriminated, fully agreed. But you cannot have a democracy where the majority has advantages. If you give the majority (since the Mandal commission, pretty much everyone except the forward castes, who are a stark minority - brahmins make up 1% of modern day India's popuation) any power, they are going to have it forever, that's the way democracy works. If in the future the dalits are the opressors and the brahmins are the opressed, the 'law and constitution' cannot do anything to prevent this. The only reason why the lower castes have constitutional protection is chance and fortunate timing. The british left exactly when democracy was the popular form of government and our leaders had a clean slate to design the government on. This is something that you learn in a first year statistics course. If you give an advantage toward the majority, they have it for good and you no longer have an equal system (because, if a leader hypothetically removes reservation, the majority will simply vote people who promise to put it back. You may have a few lower caste people who think that brahmins and the other FCs should have a fair chance, but most people are worried about whether their children are going to get into a good college to worry about ethics). What the government should have done is have reservation based on economics. That's not fixed. Once the reserved poor person becomes wealthy, he no longer gets the reservation. But in the SC/ST case, that's not true. And, in my opinion, a poor brahmin deserves as much help as a poor backward cast person. Most of the discrimination, especially in urban places, is a thing of the past. Do you really think that every brahmin is somehow guilty because their ancestors did bad things in the past?

To conclude, I think you're mistaken as to why so many forward caste people emigrate. Its not that America's an easy place to make money (quite the opposite). I personally do not care about reservation because I'm good enough to get what I want out of merit. But, when I got the chance to leave India and study abroad, I immediately grabbed it for the sole reason that I was never treated fairly by my own country. And no one else has any idea what that's like. Your home is where you're supposed to be an equal. No one likes it when parents practice favoritism and I think the government's no different. In short, we go to America because for once in our lives, we'd like a fair contest (btw, a lot of the software engineers that go to america are your so called 'grasshoppers').

This is exactly how the idiots spoil the young minds of India in India by generalizing and accusing some one of laziness .The grasshopper Dalits of India are one of the most hard working people on planet earth. The problem in their life is how ever hard they work they have always been slaves by deceit, betrayal and what not . The ant doesn't work but spend money in proving that it works by media marketing, It even wins election that way. While almost all ants have the wealth inherited from their vampire ant parents/ werewolf parents sucking blood on the innocent grasshopper at last they even turn the tables around like this. The ant's belong to all religion or perhaps not true to any religion, the main motive is money by hook or crook while the grass hopper has guidelines and self discipline to follow so the entire humans eat whether its their country or the world. Grasshopper doesn't have mind set for job dignity it does what the country and world requires, while ant does only what will give it power and wealth and shamelessly move to any country robbing all it can from another country be it health wealth happiness techniques. Grasshopper is actually has the following spine, heart and brains. While the ant has none of the above. The ant shows no respect to the provider called grass hopper and it will do the same to any country it moves without remorse or moral what so ever.

Indian Version

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and
laying up supplies for the winter because it comes from place where there is four season and it doesnt understand that grasshopper lives in a place with summer all around the years and some ants are jealous about grass hopper for the same.

The Grasshopper's babies thinks the Ant is a fool and laughs & dances & plays the
summer away, while the ant is busy marketing that even the grown up's do it.

Come winter ,the Ant is warm and well fed because it has extra money as it evaded Taxes in India .One thing that the ant is good at is evading tax and help criminals evade tax. The Grasshopper has no food or
shelter so he dies out in the cold because he was systematically put in that place by the ant, who supposed to work for the grass hopper.

NDTV, BBC, CNN show up to provide pictures of the shivering Grasshopper
next to a video of the Ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with
food as thats the truth.

The World is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be that this poor
Grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

The Ant has since migrated to the US and set up a multi-billion dollar
company in Silicon Valley they try to exactly replicate this in all common wealth countries and do the same in Middle east by acting like muslims and spoiling their name do the same around the globe and mint money by tempting government around the globe ..

100s of Grasshoppers still die of starvation despite reservation somewhere
in India as per ants plan …
As a result of loosing lot of so called hard working Ants and looting the
Grasshoppers, India is still a developing country!!!

Agreed. Urban legend. I had read this story previously in it's pistachio ice cream form (pistachio is hand-packed and thus takes longer to buy). At least this version of the legend makes more sense, as vapor lock would more commonly occur if you tried to restart the car too soon. As an aside, vapor lock is a phenomenon that fuel injection pretty much eliminated.

When I read this (probably in Reader's Digest) a million moons ago, it was Pistachio Ice Cream, and the information about the successful business man, allergies, notes by the technician and the location of the ice cream were not present. Coincidentally, I was just thinking about this story a few days ago.

Abolish all reservations based on caste, religion. If reservation has to be there, it strictly needs to be based on the economic status of a person.
